The first "motion picture" - 





1890s Etienne Moray created the first "motion picture" using the negatives on film reels

1895 The first film shot with the Cinématographe camera is La Sortie de l'usine Lumière a Lyon (Workers leaving the Lumière factory at Lyon).

People ran out of the theater in Paris because they thought it was real!

1896 - Arrival of the Train by the Lumiere brothers



1902 Georges Méliès produces his magnificent "Voyage to the Moon", a fifteen minute epic fantasy. The film used innovative special effect techniques and introduced color to the screen through hand-painting and tinting

They hand-painted the negative film slides


These are two more examples of silent films
  - audio (sound) was not yet invented
- An orchestra or piano played alongside the screen inside the theater as the film rolled.
