Art of Film

The 80s!

The BLOCKBUSTER became more and more popular.

Blockbuster means: very popular and expensive film filled with movie stars.
These pack the theaters, people talk about them afterwards,
they cost a LOT of $$$$ but GROSS a LOT of $$$$!!!

EXAMPLES:

Gone with the Wind, The Sound of Music, The Star Wars trilogy, The Hunger Games trilogy, Harry Potter series, etc.........

In 1981 George Lucas and Steven Spielberg teamed up to create a film also starring Harrison Ford....

This became a BLOCKBUSTER TRILOGY with

Prequel: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and sequel Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)

Teen comedy films became more and more popular

1984

1985

1986

The rating "PG-13" was invented in 1984 to cover movies between PG and R

PG means ?
R means ?

Steven Spielberg also co-produced and directed............

(1982)

We will watch PARTS of the film  - not the WHOLE THING (not enough time, sorry!)

- Spielberg was inspired by an imaginary friend he had when he was a child in the 1960s
- It was filmed in chronological order to more easily portray the emotional development of the characters
- When it was released, E.T. SURPASSED the Star Wars trilogy in the amount of money it made in ticket sales -- the HIGHEST GROSSING film at that time!

Animation of E.T.

They used animatronics for E.T.'s extendable neck and arms.

Remember Mary Poppin's robin ? same idea....

E.T.'s face was inspired by Albert Einstein, Carl Sandberg, and Ernest Hemingway.

Tomorrow, I will give you more information about E.T.'s creation.....

Today, let's watch part of the beginning.... We will watch PARTS of the film  - not the WHOLE THING (not enough time, sorry!)
